Venturing Down to the Basement With You

T. Dallas Saylor

I grope for the   naked
                                                      bulb chain   in the dark
among old chairs & pillows   pressing our bodies
                                     like thoughts merging   to dust
                                              but only broken   breathing
                                               things live here   like sparks

in brief panic I’m   reaching out
                                                             lonely   desperate
                                              hoping for heat   to ignite
to guide me toward   your breathing
                                                             safety   against my fingertips

but all I can see is   the shape of
what’s before my eyes   your body & mine
                                         becoming shadows   becoming one
