3 haiku 1 couplet and 2 tanka: pueblo colorado
Lucian Staiano-Daniels
under the engines the bridge
the chatter
red winged blackbirds
black under blue black
pickup pick forward
hard slice of light
eighth grade graduation
steel town
she spangles headlights
white noon
drunk yells night prayers at nothing
that i do
that you do
that she do and he do we
down side the dollars general
weck words from litter and wires
dunkin in a low town
rush of warmth say hon
blue hair blue x
stars and bars her neck
be old by thirty
Lucian Staiano-Daniels received a BA from St. John’s College, an MA from NYU, and a PhD in history from UCLA. He is by profession a historian (early-career; early-modern). His poetry has been published in The Fortnightly Review, and his first academic book is forthcoming next year from Cambridge University Press. Delicate attention to small and ordinary things is what a social historian does, and it is also what a poet does.
